Located in the eastern part of Sindhupalchok at 1451m above sea level, Shree Kali Devi Secondary School is situated in Gati-9. It can be reached through a minor road off the Araniko highway and the Bhotekoshi River. Established in 1986, this school is the only secondary school in Gati VDC that provides classes from grades 1 to 10. It has 249 students, 14 teachers, one account officer, and one peon. Kali Devi Secondary School has produced five batches of SLC students with excellent results, and it is currently headed by Mr. Krishna Kumar Jaisi.

Namaste!

I am Krishna Kumar Jaishi from the far west of Nepal, currently serving as a head teacher at Shree Kali Devi Secondary School. I believe education is not just a process of giving knowledge for a future job but a lifelong process that creates an understanding of moral and ethical values to guide one’s life on the right path.

In 2005, our school was lucky enough to get a connection with the Namaste Nepal Freiberg team, who visited Gati village for the first time to observe the situation of our village, people, and education system. At that time, our school used to provide education up to grade 5 only. Students willing to do secondary education in the village must join other schools within a distance of more than an hour’s walk from the village. This was one of the reasons why most of the children had to remain in a village without higher education. As a result, while the Namaste Nepal Freiberg team was back in their country, we were informed to get support for additional teachers to upgrade classes to a second level where a student can enrol till grade 10 in the village. Since then, many children were benefited from transforming their life through quality education in a village with better facilities.

The position our school is in today is the result of the constant support of Namaste Nepal and Namaste Nepal Freiberg. In 2015, a destructive earthquake badly hit Nepal, due to which we had to suffer from colossal destruction and damage to our 10-room school building. At the time, the villagers were upset and worried about their children’s education. It was very challenging to convince villagers to ensure security and free them from fear of aftershocks. Without the support of Namaste Nepal Freiberg, it wouldn’t have been possible to build an earthquake-resistant school building. The new building consists of 8 rooms where students can learn without fear of earthquakes.

Namaste Nepal has played a vital role in improving education by providing additional teachers and other educational materials, including libraries, playing materials, ECD class operation support, ICT materials, science lab equipment, etc., for better facilities in the school. Currently, we have around 213 students enrolling in the school in different grades; students from neighbouring villages come for secondary education by 1-2 hour walk daily. Altogether 15 staff are working in the school, including eight government and seven staff from Namaste Nepal. Among eight staff from governments, eight teachers are occupied with teaching; one looks after account/school finance, and one staff is a school caretaker. Similarly, seven teachers, one technical assistant and one health assistant supported by Namaste Nepal are fully engaged in their duty for smooth operation. We are delighted with the student’s performance on the national level examination compared to other schools in the region, as students of Shree Kali Devi Secondary Schools are obtaining better results in their final board examination.

Lastly, I highly appreciate and would like to express my gratitude from the bottom of my heart for such a remarkable and humanitarian act to Namaste Nepal Kathmandu and Namaste Nepal Freiberg for supporting the improvement of education in Gati village.

Thank you.
